The natural pearls that stud this sculpture's spine are reflected in the narrative of their formation, which as you may know, begins from a grain of sand, or similar irritant, that eventually ends in their creation. I decided on this pose not to illicit a sense of despair, but more a pause before moving forwards, as like the pearl, wisdom is hard won in many instances arriving and growing from experiences often derived from pain and discomfort.
