Artist Bio

ARTIST STATEMENT

Like many artists,  I live and breathe the entire process of creating, I'm inspired by natural form-  especially the human body and all the wonderful things it can do, which includes my love of dance and yoga.  I enjoy multiple aspects of the creative process-  from the visceral joy of playing with paint,  the tactile pleasure of a piece of clay,  learning something new or practical problem solving,  through to indulging my brain in the thought processes that underscore any artistic endeavour;  I can guarantee that if my attitude leans towards negativity it will be because I’ve not been able to invest the time to nourish this.

My background is in Graphic Design which I studied at the London College of Printing and this has definitely influenced the way in which I work,  primarily in my exploration of a subject which is a multi-faceted enquiry.

Currently I’m working on a series called ‘States of Being’,  exploring this narrative across different mediums which allows me to expand the subject in subtly shifting ways.  At its core it’s an exploration of identity and what it is that makes us into the complex individuals that we become over time.  Many aspects of our lives,  such as community,  environmental and cultural factors,  personal life events,  gender and ethnicity impact this.  As humans we veer from feelings of pride in some of our traits to dissatisfaction,  a continual balancing act-  we learn kindness partially by recognising difficult impulses of our own and others,  to give and receive love through sometimes suffering heartache,  to be parents by being children,  to be teachers by being inquisitive;  all these, and many others, are the fluid building blocks of the self.

I hope that my work tells an emotional and human story which people are able to connect with and interpret through their own life experiences.
